Baptism

The sacrament of baptism is the beginning of our Christian faith journey, where we become a 'Child of God' and a friend and follower of Jesus Christ. We have a share in his life and we join his family - the Church.

St Mary's Erskineville celebrates the Rite of Baptism during Mass on the 1st Sunday of each month outside of Lent.

Preparation for baptism includes:

  • Commitment and welcome ceremony to include parents, child and Godparents, where possible, at any of the Sunday Liturgies two weeks prior to the baptism.
  • Preparation and formation for parents and where possible, Godparents (1-1.5 hours) time and day to be negotiated with the Sacramental Coordinator or Parish Priest.
  • Godparents at least one Godparent MUST be a practicing Catholic who has received all sacraments of initiniation - Baptism, Eucharist & Confirmation. The other Godparent must be of a Christian domination not non-denominational. Non Christian Godparents are witnesses and their names will not appear on the Baptism Certificate.
  • The Rite of Baptism conferred on the 1st Sunday of the month.
